School & Community Profile
Natuashish is a small community of approximately 700 people and is nestled in the woods adjacent to Sango Mountain. This relatively new community is now fully constructed with the people enjoying a better quality of life through improved infrastructure and services like a modern school, improved health care facilities, high quality homes, a recreation complex, and in the initial construction phases, a community center.
The population is predominantly Mushuau Innu people, and recreational activities involve mainly outdoor pursuits, such as fishing, hunting, trapping, and snowmobiling. Floor hockey and volleyball are two popular indoor sports. The community is largely focused around traditional culture and activities, with many gathering events that celebrate Innu culture and way of life. Economic activity within the community centers on governmental organizations and private businesses.
Natuashish is a reservation and it has been a long term plan for the Mushuau Innu Band Council to assume control of education in the community. That plan came to life in 2009 when the Mushuau Innu Band Council devolved education, and passed control to Mamu Tshishkutamashutau / Innu Education; a Board of Trustees comprised of Innu leaders from the communities of Natuashish and Sheshatshiu.
